A Magical Night Before Christmas at Belvoir Castle

reading time: min, words

LeftLion were delighted to be invited to the fairytale home of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland, Belvoir Castle, for an exclusive preview of their enchanting new experience, A Magical Night Before Christmas.

From Saturday 29 November to Tuesday 30 December, visitors can enjoy a rare opportunity to explore this early 19th-century historic home, beautifully transformed with beautiful festive decorations. Belvoir’s expert guides will be on hand to share the Castle’s rich history — a place that has welcomed Kings, Queens and Prime Ministers over the centuries. Designed with all ages in mind, the experience promises something special for everyone.

There truly is something for everyone to enjoy during a visit to the Castle. Our youngest LeftLion reviewer, Silvia, was greeted on arrival by the warm, festive scent that filled the hallway leading up to the grand staircase. Young visitors like her can embark on a playful quest to spot the mischievous Christmas mice hidden throughout the many rooms, with a chance to win a prize once they complete the trail. Children can also pen a heartfelt letter to Santa and post it straight into the Castle’s own letterbox for the big man himself to read.

Every room is exquisitely decorated, each one more magical than the last, creating a true prince-and-princess atmosphere throughout the Castle. The attention to detail is remarkable — from glittering garlands to opulent ornaments that complement the historic grandeur of the building. Our favourite space of the day was the breathtaking Regent Gallery. Stepping inside feels like entering a fairytale: the high ceilings sparkle with ornate chandeliers, and at the centre stands a magnificent royal-purple Christmas tree that fills the room with a sense of enchantment and celebration. It’s a show-stopping space that captures the festive spirit perfectly.

Another standout space for us was the State Dining Room — a luxurious setting where you can easily imagine the grand dinner parties and lavish celebrations that have taken place over the centuries. The table is dressed to perfection, offering a glimpse into the Castle’s storied past and the many distinguished guests who would have once gathered there.

Throughout the festive season, the magic continues with live Christmas carols performed in the Ballroom by local school choirs and community groups, adding an extra layer of warmth and tradition to the experience. Along the trail, one of the key highlights is the spectacular 20ft ‘Wishing Tree,’ where visitors are invited to hang a decoration inscribed with their own Christmas wish — a lovely moment for both children and adults alike.

While we were exploring, Silvia was especially thrilled to meet Santa himself. Throughout December, Father Christmas will be greeting visitors in his cosy Grotto located in the Old Kitchen. He’ll be there every day, providing little ones with a truly memorable encounter. Tickets for the Grotto are sold separately — and they’re booking up quickly!

We were also treated to refreshments and warm cakes in the beautifully decorated Tea Room — a cosy haven filled with festive charm. Guests can elevate their visit even further by booking a festive afternoon tea, which includes a carefully curated selection of seasonal savouries, delicate patisserie, and freshly baked scones. Priced at £35, it’s a wonderfully indulgent way to round off a magical day at the Castle.

The festivities continue beyond the Castle walls, too. Throughout December, the Belvoir Retail Village is hosting a variety of seasonal activities and experiences. Visitors can take part in exclusive workshops, including a special wreath-making session on 5 December, perfect for adding a personal touch to their holiday décor. On 13 and 20 December, families will have the chance to meet Santa’s reindeer — a highlight for little ones and grown-ups alike. There’s also the opportunity to build bespoke Christmas hampers in the newly refurbished farm shop, selecting from an array of locally sourced treats to create the perfect personalised gift.

Our visit to the Castle was nothing short of magical and left us brimming with festive spirit. We’re certain that anyone visiting Belvoir Castle throughout December will come away feeling just as enchanted — and well and truly ready for Christmas.
