We sent one of our writers to reunite with lo-fi psych-rock duo The Lovely Eggs as they visited Nottingham's Metronome - on Halloween night - as part of a UK tour. He came away impressed, entertained and thoroughly reassured about the future of rock...
Uncompromisingly defiant, The Lovely Eggs do it for themselves. As guitarist Holly Ross says, "we play for our own entertainment". This echoes Sonic Youth, who famously said they watch the audience when the audience thinks they are watching the band. I've known Holly and her husband David Blackwell from The Lovely Eggs for a while now, so it felt natural to see them tonight. It didn't seem like 20 years had passed.
The evening started with great support from Polite Bureaux who were a power force, dressed up as a mix of electro and rock.
That was followed by Eric Rushton who delved into the depths of his mind and his persona; sometimes harrowing, sometimes weird but always funny. It tales a lot of guts to stand alone on stage like he did.
Tonight's headline show at Metronome was a raucous journey through their years including Have You Ever Heard A Digital Accordion? and Wiggy Giggy. The Eggs are one of a kind, pulling in collaborations with great artists: Shrigley, Jupitus, Fellows... the list goes on.
This band are independent and honest. On display tonight was their true love of Lancaster; they told the tale of the olive that fell out of a posh sandwich and inspired Oh The Stars; and an astrophysicist joined them on stage discussing how the Universe can be in the stars.
There were also a couple of personal references, which Holly explained later, while David announced their upcoming gig at The Rose of England, a pub that has special resonance for me (although Holly said she couldn't remember it). The band expressed their disappointment that Nottingham hadn't made the most of Halloween (Holly came on wearing a skeleton top design) and told a story about a demon fly, but the audience looked very reluctant to follow suit, sadly.
Don't Look At Me, F**k It and People are Twats were highlights from the lengthy set - and would have been even if I wasn't full of cider and Buckie.
It's great to see The Lovely Eggs doing so well and have such support from their audience, leading to a great night all round.
Happy Halloween.
The Lovely Eggs performed at Metronome on 31st October 2025, with support from Eric Rushton and Polite Bureaux (featured in the photos below).
