Dazzling homage to the 90s pop powerhouse...

An electrifying blast from the past. Steps, Here and Now is a daring, camp, funny, and irresistibly nostalgic musical that pays dazzling homage to one of the pop powerhouses of the 90s: Steps.

With its irresistible mix of glitter, humour and heartfelt emotion, this show is a joyous reminder of why the band’s songs still hold such power to uplift and unite audiences.

Set against the unlikely backdrop of a seaside supermarket, Better Best Bargains,  the story follows four friends: Caz (Rebecca Lock), Vel (Jacqui Dubois), Robbie (Dean Rickards), and Neeta (Rosie Singha). Together, they make a pact to embrace a “summer of love,” pushing themselves beyond the familiar aisles of routine to chase adventure, passion and a little chaos.

What unfolds is a warm, funny and at times deeply touching exploration of friendship, self-discovery and second chances — all propelled by the infectious melodies and emotions of Steps’ greatest hits.

The production design is a sensory treat. Its vivid palette of candy-bright colours and 90s retail items immerses the audience instantly. From the gleaming trolleys and stacked shelves to beach inflatables and Valentine’s displays, the stage bursts with detail. The design mirrors the exuberant energy of Steps’ greatest hits — joyous and just a touch over the top.

The costumes are a masterclass in 90s throwback fashion: think bum bags, shiny puffer jackets, double denim decked in patches, and a glorious abundance of butterfly clips. Every look feels lifted straight from a Smash Hits magazine spread.

Humor is one of the show’s biggest strengths and woven throughout. The show is not afraid to lean into its own absurdity — from witty supermarket puns to exaggerated dance hoe downs to push discounts.

Yet beneath the glitter and gags, there are moments of real emotional depth. One of the most moving scenes sees Caz centre stage, pouring her heart into ‘You’re Only a Heartbeat Away’ as she confronts the lingering grief of losing her stillborn son thirteen years earlier. It’s an unexpectedly raw and poignant moment that silences the theatre — proof that the show’s heart beats just as loudly as its humour.

Vocally, the cast are phenomenal. Each performer channels the spirit of Steps while adding their own flavour:  strong, distinctive and bursting with personality. Their harmonies are tight, their energy boundless and their chemistry infectious. It’s a celebration not just of the band, but of the communal joy that pop music can bring.

The choreography, too, would make Steps proud. Crisp, slick and packed with recognisable moves, it evokes the music videos that defined a generation. Every number is a nostalgia trip. It’s impossible not to tap along, clap on the beat or sing under your breath.

Steps, Here and Now is pure pop theatre magic. A joyful celebration of love, friendship and the music that defined a generation. It’s cheeky, heartfelt and irresistibly feel-good, leaving audiences grinning from ear to ear. Whether you’re a lifelong Steps devotee or just in need of a little sparkle, this show is the perfect nostalgic escape.

A foot kickin’, finger clickin’, leather slapping, hand clappin’ pop stage phenomenon!

Steps Here and Now plays at Nottingham's Theatre Royal until Saturday 15 November.
