The world-renowned Hallé Orchestra wrapped the city in a warm embrace of Christmas spirit, creating a concert that was as joyful as it was dazzling.

Designed to entertain all generations, the program combined both beloved classics and fresh interpretations, blending the timeless magic of Christmas into one unforgettable evening. Kicking off with Christmas Overture, it immediately whisked the audience into a cinematic whirlwind of familiar carols, setting the tone for a night brimming with festivity.

Founded in Manchester in 1858, the Hallé draws exceptional talent from more than eleven countries, creating a cultural gem that continues to shine across the UK and beyond. On this special tour, their music poured festive joy into every corner of the Royal Concert Hall.

At the heart of the performance was conductor Stephen Bell, whose elegant yet dynamic presence guided the orchestra with precision and flair. Bell charmed the audience not just with his mastery of the music but with witty anecdotes, playful Christmas jokes, and engaging backstories behind the pieces. On the show-stopping finale, Sleigh Ride, Bell’s infectious energy leapt from the podium, urging the audience to join in the fun. His whirling jacket, expressive eyes, and animated gestures made every note feel alive, creating a thrilling sense of joy.

his performance had the audience singing along and cheering

The program offered a rich tapestry of Christmas cheer. From the nostalgic Somewhere in My Memory from Home Alone to the magical, twinkling motifs of The Nutcracker and the icy, spellbinding tones of a Frozen medley, the Hallé’s musicians delivered performances that resonated in both heart and bone. The horns, trumpets, and crashing cymbals in particular brought an exhilarating punch that reverberated through the hall.

Vocalist Rodney Earl Clarke, beloved for his BBC Proms appearances, stole hearts with a dazzling display of range and charisma. From operatic brilliance to the swing and sparkle of Lonely Town and White Christmas, his performance had the audience singing along and cheering, especially in response to his glittering blue suit, which drew extra applause.

Adding a whimsical flourish, many Hallé musicians adorned their stands and themselves with tinsel, Santa hats and reindeer antlers, while projections of snow, ice, and dancing angels floated above. The visual spectacle, paired with the music, made the concert feel like a full-bodied Christmas story come to life.

This enchanting performance deserves a spot on every Advent calendar.

The Hallé Christmas Concert played to the Royal Concert Hall on Wednesday, 17 December 2025.
