We check out The Slice: a new artisan bakery and Roman pizza spot on Middle Pavement...

Slice

It’s sometimes hard to find city centre spots for a light lunchtime treat without breaking the bank, or committing to a ‘dining-out’ experience. The Slice, however, is a pretty lovely resolution to that. Whether you’re seeking a quick-ish afternoon bite, or lengthy catch-up with somebody, you’ll probably find what you’re looking for here.

This artisan bakery and eatery used to be a street food stall, appearing at occasions such as the Hucknall Market and Wollaton Farmer’s Market. Since the start of December, they’ve found a permanent home on Middle Pavement, which is a pretty lovely space to walk into: airy, bright, and tastefully decorated – an atmosphere matched by the relaxed and welcoming demeanour of the two guys behind the counter.

Their main selling points are pizza-by-the-slice, sourdough bread and cinnamon rolls, all made in on-site ovens. Everything is on rotation, so there’s always something new to try.

The price of individual pizza slices varies between £3 and £4.50, with a six-slice helping varying between £15 and £22.50. It’s great value – one to three slices would probably sort most people out lunchtime-wise (it's an attractive prospect to try several, as each looks so tasty).

It’s sometimes hard to find city centre spots for a light lunchtime treat without breaking the bank, or committing to a ‘dining-out’ experience. The Slice, however, is a pretty lovely resolution to that.

On my visit I choose a slice of the Forest Floor pizza: containing mushrooms, artichokes, and kalamata olives on a tomato base, seasoned with garlic and oregano – along with the Salame: a little simpler but no-less delicious, with salami Napoli, parmesan, and extra virgin olive oil. Together, they provide me a little ‘slice’ of heaven on a cold December afternoon. Other regulars on their menu include the Ndjua sausage pizza, the Gustosa – with potato, rosemary, and Italian sausage – and other veggie options like the Ortolana vegetable medley.

The cinnamon buns are also wonderful – made on-site and served with freshly topped vanilla or caramel glaze. It’s a little difficult to eat with plastic cutlery but worth the extra effort with a fluffy, not-to-overpowering texture (but one that will definitely fill you up!).

Aside from that, they sell lots of sourdough varieties at The Slice – Kalamata Olives and Saffron and Cheddar and Jalapeno, to name but a couple, plus panini rolls and brioches – all made on site. There’s also coffee, tea, refrigerated and shelf goods – if you’re a fan of the economical charm of classic, Italian lunchtime eateries, The Slice is a must-visit. It’s also a good option if the darkness of January has you feeling down-and-out – if that’s the case, why not treat yourself to a slice or two….?
