Through a Mirror, Darkly

Where: Bonington Gallery
When: Saturday 21 March - Saturday 9 May
How much: Free

Naeem Mohaiemen, the 2018 Turner Prize- nominated visual artist, filmmaker and writer,; screens his brand-new three-channel film at Bonington  Gallery. Each ninety-minute showing explores the events of America in May 1970: a tumultuous time defined decorated by the bloody end of the Vietnam War. We follow the student protest against domestic and overseas racism in Ohio and Mississippi, and subsequent state-sanctioned violent response – resulting in the deaths of six students.

Mohaiemen explores the tension of racialised violence, attending to the disparity in press-coverage between each campus shooting. He weaves voices together from across the era, revealing a confrontational confronting exploration of protest, political violence, and memorialisation.
