Off the back of the success of the New Nottingham Journal Issue One, the team are now inviting submissions for short fiction, creative non-fiction and slow journalism for issue two...
After selling out its debut issue, the New Nottingham Journal – the city’s print literary journal publishing short fiction, slow journalism, poetry and black-and-white art – is preparing its return in 2026.
Launched via a Kickstarter campaign last summer, the journal raised almost £3,500 with the support of Nottingham’s literary community.
Submissions are now open for the second issue, due to launch in the latter half of the year.
The first issue received hundreds of submissions from around the world, aided by the UNESCO Cities of Literature network and a range of partners who helped bring the project to an international audience. Published in partnership with LeftLion’s imprint Agamemnon, Issue One was launched at Nottingham Central Library last November. It has since sold out and will see a second print run.
Andrew Tucker Leavis, the journal's founder and editor, said: "Thanks to an incredible groundswell of support from Nottingham and miles beyond, we’ve been able to launch a new print journal dedicated to short fiction, poetry, slow journalism and photography, and to keep its momentum going.
"It’s time to build on that beginning with Issue 2. We hope to make the NNJ a home for accomplished, eclectic writing and we’d love to see what you’ve been creating."
The editorial team are now inviting submissions for Issue Two. Poets may submit up to four poems in a single document, each no more than 2,000 characters (including spaces). Short fiction, creative non-fiction and slow journalism should be under 4,000 words.
There are no restrictions on theme or subject. Submitters are not limited by age, background or geography. For work set in or focused on Nottinghamshire, contributors are encouraged to consider its resonance to an audience outside of the city as well.

We have a favour to ask
LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
