For this month’s Pick Six we turned to award-winning Nigerian-British writer Yomi Sode who will be performing at Lakeside Arts on 11 June as part of Nottingham Poetry Festival.
Film
I have a lot of favourite films. Please note that I may be repeating that part a lot haha. Right now, I’m thinking about Man on Fire. The Denzel Washington classic that has recently been adapted to a series (I’m nervous about adaptations.) It has all the feels I require from a film. No matter when it’s on, I find that I’m there till it ends.
Book
None of these questions are fair, by the way. I don’t know if I have a favourite book. A memorable book is Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. It really is a beautiful novel around lineage, family and everything in between.
Album
I really enjoy Michael Kiwanuka’s Home Again album. It settles me a lot. I actually haven’t visited it in a while, but I think of it often. I don’t know if I’m the type to know songs off the dome like that, but I love music, and appreciate how outward it can be, hence the format of the show (THAT YOU ALL SHOULD BE ATTENDING!).
Computer game
I absolutely do not have one, unfortunately. I live vicariously via the kids playing their games. I have some zombie games waiting for me to press start, though. I have a real interest in horror. You did not ask about my favourite film genre. The new GTA is en route also. I just might! I don’t have as much time on my hands for games. I should, though, I should.
Sports team
Arsenal, by proxy of close friends and family. Doubt it would be any other team to be honest. Premier League Champions.
Notts Spot
Not been in Nottingham long enough to venture around however, I’ve heard about the Old Market Square, the Castle, and also the caves? The caves sound intense. Here for it though. I’ve heard about Secret Garden and Pit and the Pendulum? Either way – wanting local, wanting a vibe.
Nottingham Poetry Festival takes place at various venues around Nottingham between 5 - 14 June 2026. Catch Yomi Sode in collaboration with Rewyld at Lakeside Arts on Thursday 11 June. Visit the Nottingham Poetry Festival website to for more info and to book tickets.
We have a favour to ask
LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
