West Bridgford born coffee shop and bakery ØKENDE is known for its cool, minimalist design and elegant pastries. Last month, this popular independent opened a second store on Broad Street, introducing a new day-to-night spot in Hockley.

If you are local to West Bridgford, ØKENDE needs no introduction. The store’s stripped back decor – simple and neutral with pale wood throughout – is a sharp contrast to the bold, busy interiors of many modern coffee shops.

ØKENDE is Scandinavian not just in appearance but taste as well, from the high-quality coffee (sourced from acclaimed Danish roaster La Cabra) to a selection of the pastries on the counter. The name itself is Norwegian, roughly translated to ‘increasing’. Alongside the delectable pastries, there will be loaves of freshly baked sourdough — ØKENDE’s specialty — available to buy daily.

Coffee remains central to ØKENDE’s identity and the new site boasts a UK-first in the Mavam MM Super Auto Espresso Machine, previously unseen in a commercial setting and recognisable from the distinct silver taps built into the counter. With beans ground, milk frothed and coffee poured all at the push of a single button, this innovative bean-to-cup process is designed for consistency and precision without compromising quality.

Hockley is home to some of Nottingham’s finest coffee shops, but ØKENDE hopes to offer something unique with its later opening hours and combined focus on coffee and wine

The city centre store also has a strong focus on ‘natural’ and ‘low-intervention’ wines. For anyone unfamiliar with these terms, they indicate a minimal-meddling approach to winemaking, which uses organically grown grapes and little or no additives. The method is gaining traction across the industry and aligns well with ØKENDE’s ethos of simplicity paired with premium products.

By day, customers can have their fill of coffee and pastries; at night, they will be able to enjoy nibbles and small plates over a glass of vino. And while ØKENDE will definitely appeal to people who take their coffee and wine seriously, it is not just for connoisseurs. You can also order matcha, hot chocolate, different teas, seasonal soft drinks and even a pint on draught from the store’s beer taps.

Students and remote workers will be pleased to hear that ØKENDE welcomes laptops, thanks to a generous sixty-seat capacity indoors. Renovation of the downstairs space is ongoing but will add substantially more seating, while customers have already been making the most of the outdoor tables and chairs in the recent sunshine.

Hockley is home to some of Nottingham’s finest coffee shops, but ØKENDE hopes to offer something unique with its later opening hours and combined focus on coffee and wine – somewhere people can sip a latte and savour a glass of red under the same roof.

Find ØKENDE’s new store at 4-6 Broad St, NG1 3AL.
